Queensland’s first Mental Health Commissioner, Dr Lesley van Schoubroeck, has begun work to improve frontline mental health services across the state.
Underlying her plans to drive sector reform is a whole-of-government approach. This includes greater coordination of different agencies to better support people accessing services and addressing the impact of substance abuse in communities.
In a media statement released this week, Queensland’s Minister for Health, Lawrence Springborg, said the new Commissioner (along with the Queensland Mental Health Commission) has been tasked with developing a Strategic Plan which will form the guideline for government and non-government organisations working together across the sector.
The Commissioner has taken a holistic approach aimed at developing and consolidating partnership across the community, government and other sectors, with a focus on placing responsibility for improving outcomes across a number of key areas including health, education, housing, employment and justice.
