headspace Ipswich was today officially opened by Federal Minister for Mental Health, the Hon Mark Butler MP.
Providing a boost to the mental health and wellbeing of young people in the Ipswich area, the much needed headspace centre will offer young people betweeb 12 – 25 years free general and mental health support, assistance with alcohol and other drug problems, employment and social support, as well as and information for young people and their families.
In the media release following the launch, the Minister said 1 in 4 young people will experience a mental health issue this year with three-quarters of these people not receiving the professional help they need because of a lack of access to youth-specific mental health services or because they don’t know who to turn to.
Therefore, providing young people with access to these important services, will make a real difference to the lives of many young Australians. In particular, in Ipswich, a range of other factors including, community need, population size and growth, dictated the need for the new centre.
headspace Ipswich Service Manager, Erina Tipoki, said “[the] centre has been operational since February and already we have seen over 100 young people come through our doors … [It’s] obvious to us how important this centre is and will be to the local community. What we have experienced in establishing this new headspace has been nothing short of phenomenal. The local community, including local service providers and businesses, have come together and all worked in partnership to ensure its success.”
